Washington is the one city where you can look everything up and still turn up on the wrong day. The National Veterans Parade does not march on Veterans Day. It marches at noon on Sunday, November 8, up Constitution Avenue from the National Archives to the White House, and the organisers have that on their own site with a countdown clock running against it. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11: that is the national ceremony at Arlington, and that is the day the restaurant offers run. Three separate dates in one week, and most of what you will read online folds them into one. The meals are the least settled part of all: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.
The parade, and why it is on a Sunday
The National Veterans Parade steps off at noon on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and runs the length of Constitution Avenue from the National Archives to the White House. This is the fourth one; the National Veterans Parade Foundation describes it as the first and only national parade for veterans held in Washington. A Sunday gets you a closed Constitution Avenue and a crowd that can actually attend, which is the whole argument for moving it off the Wednesday.
Two other things run alongside it and both are already dated. The NVP5K starts at eight that same Sunday morning from Constitution and 6th Street, out along the parade route and back, so if you are driving in for the parade the road situation starts four hours before the parade does. And on the Saturday, November 7, there is a marching band parade and field show on the Mall between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial, nine in the morning until four in the afternoon.
So the weekend is Saturday bands, Sunday run and parade. The holiday itself is the Wednesday, three days later.
Arlington on the eleventh
The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery, across the river in Virginia, on November 11 every year, and the Department of Veterans Affairs has 11/11/2026 posted. It begins precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns, then moves inside the Memorial Amphitheater for a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. It is organised through the Veterans Day National Committee, which is made up of nearly fifty veteran-serving organisations.
This year’s official poster is worth a look before you go, because it tells you what the ceremony is built around: it sets the modern American flag against an early American one, tying the founding to the generations who have defended it, and it marks the country’s 250th anniversary. That poster is the cover of the official program at Arlington on the eleventh.
Arlington itself has not yet published the visitor detail for the day, which is normal for September. We are watching the cemetery’s own events page and will put the parking, gate and seating detail here when it goes up.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.
So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which in this metro means the Virginia and Maryland locations are their own decision. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.
One thing specific to Washington: the offers run on Wednesday the 11th, not on parade Sunday. If you march up Constitution Avenue and go looking for a free meal afterwards, you are three days early.

What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.

Where to eat on the parade route
The route runs from the National Archives to the White House, which is about half a mile of Penn Quarter and downtown on your right the whole way. All four of these are within a few blocks of it, ranked by Insider Score. Two that are not on the list: Falafel Inc scores 9.9, the highest in the city, but it is out in Georgetown, and Rose’s Luxury scores 9.5 and is shut on Sundays entirely.
